Cinco de Mayo was not always celebrated the same way, it was celebrated by Mexican Americans in the mid 1800s as an act of resistance. Cinco de Mayo was then celebrated because they also wanted to commemorate their acts of resistance during the U.S. Mexican war. After the war the Mexican Americans who decided to become U.S. citizens knew that the promises they made weren't going to come true.
When Cinco de Mayo is celebrated families would cook, dance the "Jarabe Tapatio" Mexican hat dance and praying for their ancestors.
